When I read Kingdom Come, I wasn’t familiar with the New Gods yet so I didn’t take much notice of her. Actually, Kingdom Come was like the third comic series I ever read and I probably wasn’t educated enough in the DCU to appreciate it fully and a reread is likely in order.
(If anyone’s curious, I read Gotham City Sirens, then Teen Titans v1 and v2 [and Team Titans, but I’m not counting it as a separate book because it got so entwined with NTT that I gave in and read it too] and then I read Kingdom Come.)
But, the thing about Avia is that she sided with Superman and Red Robin, whereas Mar’i was part of Batman’s Outsiders along with Lian and Ibn, though Ibn was a mole in the Makind Liberation Front. So that’s why their relationship can be viewed as stressed, although if Avia had sided with the current Teen Titans it would have been much worse for their friendship, and since Dick was also siding with Superman I don’t think Mar’i would have held it against her.
I personally think they, as friends with a moral disagreement, would have gone through a rough patch, but in the end the fact that neither of them were dead or hurt or actively evil would have mended their friendship easy peasy.
Sorry to awkwardly barge into this conversation, but I’m the person who thinks Mar’i and Avia have a better relationship than Mar’i and Lian.
You’re right, Avia isn’t very heavily focused on in Kingdom Come, but in The Kingdom (the sequel) and in the novelization, they gave a lot more extra information about her. In the novelization, we see Mar’i and Avia hanging out at the Teen Titans bar, and they are noted by Norman McCay to be very good friends. They interact all throughout that scene and then Superman and Green Arrow come in to recruit them to Superman and Batman’s teams. Mar’i, who doesn’t care much for her father at this point, eagerly joins Ollie while Avia doesn’t even shake his hand. Later, Avia is flying with Superman, and we find out that she hasn’t heard from Mar’i in a week, and she is worried about it. This is evidence of their relationship, but The Kingdom is what convinces me that they are better friends.
In The Kingdom, during Mari’s issue, there is a flashback where she, Avia, and Manotaur are all in Mar’i’s “treehouse” and Mar’i is musing to Avia about her trips to Tamaran as a child. Avia knows how much Mar’i misses Starfire. Mar’i starts talking about how her father is only mortal and shouldn’t be a superhero at his age, and Avia asks whether Mar’i ever stops thinking about death. Mar’i then responds by saying that she thinks a lot about Ibn, who she and Avia both saw with Ollie on an occasion other than the big recruitment scene. Avia and Manotaur both tease Mar’i about her crush on him, claiming she always talks about him. The two must have at least been on speaking terms, or they never would have seen Ibn at the same time, nor would they talk about him so much while Mar’i still only regards him as a handsome stranger (the two start flirting and are later dating by the end of the novel, and presumably during as well so this can’t be after the Gulag Battle) This, along with everything else, leads me to believe that they have a very strong relationship.
As for Lian, there wasn’t too much of her to see. The people Mar’i interacted most with were Avia, Manotaur(stated to be a childhood friend), Bruce, Ibn, and Dick. So, what I understood was that Avia and Mar’i were best friends, which is why I like to imagine them as closer than Mar’i and Lian.
Sorry about my rant, I just really love Kingdom Come a lot.
No that’s okay! Especially since you’re completely right! As I said, when I first read Kingdom Come, I wasn’t familiar with the New Gods yet, so I think that I thought Avia was Lian because of the dark hair. A very newbie mistake.
And I have to say, I interpreted the word “stressed” to mean “became difficult” (because they weren’t exactly on the same side and stuff) instead of “stressed” as in “made the point of focus”. So I didn’t mean to say that they weren’t friends, I meant to say that their relationship hadn’t gone through any hardships because of the events of Kingdom Come! My mistake.
